Pista dry fruit tree (Pistacia vera, the pistachio) is grown worldwide and used in both food and nut production. Pistachios are native to Southwest Asia, and have been grown in Iran since 2000 BC. The Persian scholar and poet Omar Khayyam wrote about the nuts and also suggested using them in salads. The first known description of pistachios was made by Pliny the Elder (AD 23 – 79), who said that the Greek pistachio tree came from the Persian city of Gizah. The trees can be grown from nuts, or from softwood cuttings. Grafted or budded pistachio trees are also available. Pistachio trees are used for several ornamental purposes.
Pistachio tree can be a great ornamental plant, however, not all varieties grow at the same pace. The average tree grows between 6 and 12 feet, but some varieties can grow 20 feet tall. The trees can grow to be 10 feet, but the size of the tree will determine the average height. The pistachio trees bear from 15 to 50 nuts, with the average size being between 4 and 8 mm in length and width.
The fruits of a pistachio tree are pistachios, although when the fruit are being harvested and dried, the name “shells” or “casings” may be used.
The plant produces its fruits during a 12 to 18-month period in warm climates, and during a nine-month period in colder areas. The tree and nuts are harvested by picking the fruits individually. The shells are picked off the nuts before they are either exported or sold. The nuts are collected in an orchard area and are then dried for two to three days, depending on the climate.
The pistachio nuts are a great source of antioxidants, are low in fats, and have a pleasant, nutty flavor. Pistachio trees are great sources of Vitamin E and other healthy nutrients.
The almond nut is an ideal snack, but it can be eaten in different ways. The seeds can be ground into almond milk, almond butter, almond snacks, and even almond energy bars and cakes.
Although most people like nuts and eat them in different ways, almonds are a good source of vitamin E and antioxidants. You should drink almond milk, eat almond snacks, and eat almond energy bars and cakes.
