Citrus tree drops fruit when they get too big, in fact, lemons, limes and oranges are all members of the Rutaceae family. The cones on the canopies of these trees tend to run to seed before they reach full size. Cones develop on the tree during the blooming phase, which is usually in late winter to early spring. But all this does not mean that we have to wait until after the season to gather our limes, lemons or oranges.
Gather citrus whenever you want during the season, and this means from now through the end of January. Harvest lemons and oranges, the longer they are on the tree, the sweeter and juicier they are. Yield increases and sugars start to accumulate in the peel and flesh of lemons and oranges. The mandarins and grapefruit don’t start to ripen until after they reach harvest size. They will have some sugar content, but not much, and are not really suitable for eating when they are still green.
What size fruit are you looking for?
Gather when the fruit is as small as you can find it, otherwise you will have too much fruit for one person, and the flesh will turn tough. Be choosy about fruit that are too large, as they tend to fall from the trees if they are too heavy. Large grapefruits may be more difficult to find, but remember that they are often for decoration at a table, or being displayed at a market stall. But no matter how big you are looking for, you can always gather more.
What fruit are you looking for?
Oranges and lemons are easier to pick than grapefruits and mandarins. The yellow leaves of these fruit trees are usually easy to spot. To find grapefruit trees, look for large leaves with an orange hue, usually from north of the equator. The leaves of mandarins can be difficult to spot, but if you look on the ground, you will usually see small white and orange-colored fruits. If you see oranges, don’t just pick them because they have a sweet smell, which is a good thing, but check the skin, there should be a white or pale green blush on it, which is a sign that the fruit is sweet.
When you harvest, take only one or two fruits per tree, especially when gathering grapefruit. The yield will be small and you will be able to gather again in the near future. The bigger the yield is, the more likely you will have disease, for the fungus thrives on plentiful and cheap food. And don’t be too picky about your fruit. Leave good fruit on the tree, and harvest a little bit from a few trees.
If you notice a problem,
While a mature orange tree is usually still a safe bet, if you are trying to gather limes or lemons, be careful not to get caught in a blast of tropical gusts as they may knock a branch from the tree. Get your harvest done early, and in a sheltered place. If a storm is coming, or if you are feeling uneasy, you can always retreat.
These can seem like nice investments, so be sure to harvest, rather than leaving them on the tree. Your harvest will last through the winter, and maybe you will have some use for them. They may turn into pickles, or you may want to use them in a cordial. There are many uses for citrus fruits, especially lemons. And this is not only due to the acid content, there is a beautiful burst of sweetness in the juice and the zest. But it is not only in our summer that the citrus fruits can be utilized.
Icing a cake recipe is just as simple as it seems. First of all, cakes and biscuits are both basically the same. Second, icing them does not require any extra expertise, aside from perhaps a little practice. Finally, these cakes are very simple to make, even for those who are less experienced with baking. All it takes is a well-made cake mix, some favorite and maybe not so favorite ingredients, and simple procedures.
Yes, the icing is the icing, but it is still better when you use real butter. Both for taste, and because margarine or shortening tends to separate. Real butter is difficult to find, but your cake should be perfect without it.
Combine cake mix with milk, and eggs in a large bowl. Beat for one minute, to allow the mix to spread evenly and create a smooth batter. Add vanilla, and you are ready to put it in the oven. Bake according to the instructions.
